January detox time! Consider boosting your detox with herbs.
Its been fun, most of us have let our hair down, eating more than we should of the types of food that are usually considered treats but somehow become a daily occurrence! However many of us feel January is a good time to do a detox, work at feeling healthy again, want that natural energy back so we are ready to start blooming when those first signs of Spring come out!!
Herbal medicine can be used to help support our body through its natural detoxification physiological processes, alongside a natural based diet based on whole foods and fruits and vegetables. Superfoods such as Spirulina and wheatgrass can also included to boost nutrients levels required to assist the body with an effective and safe detoxification.
Some examples of herbs that may be used in a detox tonic that I can formulate include:
Schizandra chinesis; Schizandra berries
The berries of this herb are involved in Phase 1 and Phase 2 Liver detoxification, important pathways in which the liver breaks down and transforms toxic molecules. It is also considered an adaptogen, supporting and nourishing the adrenal glands which is often important after long periods of stress. Some people find it an effective substitute to coffee wishing to cut down or eliminate caffeine from the diet.
Silybum marianus : Milkthistle
Silybum and silymarin are recognised as hepatoprotective, anti inflammatory and regenerative agents. Milkthistle is one of the best studied herbal medicines. All the main flavolignans protected liver cells from toxicity due to alcohol.
Uricia dioica: Nettle
Water extracts are very anti- oxidant and effective diuretics. They are full of vitamins such as Vitamins A, C,E, carotenoids and K. They also have an impressive mineral content, including calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. Our very own super-food!
A very effective lymphatic cleanser; the iriod glucodides are meant to be responsible but there is not much recent research. I find it an potent diuretic and especially useful when a patient suffers from skin problems such as eczema after a period of excess!
A herbal tincture can be prescribed to help your body in this detoxification and eliminative process. I can also advise on dietary and nutritional changes that can help in these processes. Food, literally can be used as medicine, alongside herbs in this detoxification process. The Brassica and Allium families of vegetables are potent detoxificating foods.
Feel free to call or email for an informal chat about using herbs as part of your January detox plan and start the year on the right path.
